The Summer Vacation Penthouse
July 11, 2009
The other day The New York Times ran an article about people who buy houses/apartment buildings in Chicago as a sort of city-summer-home or a pied-à-terre. Some of the people quoted in the story weren’t from other cities but rather suburbs or more rural areas(some others were just uber rich and wanted to add yet another overpriced gaudy condo to their collection).
I’m used to people who live in the city having summer homes but if you think about it it doesn’t have to be that way. There are plenty of wealthy suburbanites or rural dwellers who wouldn’t mind leaving their McMansion for a weekend to head into the city. It used to be that the only people who could afford to own two houses lived in or near cities but with the advent of super rich suburban communities the opposite is possible: people who live a leisurely life in urban sprawl central can have a relaxing weekend in dense quaint little Chicago or Los Angeles what with its cute stores and its millions of people.
