Today’s Audi
July 10, 2009

This is my second time in D.C. and I’ve noticed a few things. The first is that the District seems to have had a slight trend upgrade. I don’t know very much about fashion, but from what I do know (which, let me stress, is very little) people in the D.C. area are starting to pay more attention to it. And I mean this as someone who’s been all around the area, not just in the Georgetown area which, if anything, is rather boring in terms of apparel. What’s the point of wearing boat shoes if you’re going to a bar?
The second is that people drive Audis a lot around here. Perhaps I’m just noticing them now but I don’t think so. I’ve started to pay more attention to luxury cars after a friend of mine, over a few beers, asked me what my ideal car to drive would be. I usually stray away from this question because I’m such a public transportation lover which is probably partially because if I do become a professional full time journalist, I won’t be able to afford a nice car and perhaps even a car! But since I had this discussion (in which I said the BMW X5 and me and my friend eventually agreed that a nice car that isn’t too gaudy would be an Audi A5 (pictured above) I’ve started to pay more attention.
D.C. is still a town of the super old, super rich, super aristocratic. If that’s the reason why I’m seeing so many Audis then it’s bad news for the company which has struggled in recent history to not be the “old person’s car.” They’ve done a valiant job so far in my opinion. I mean just look at these cars! But still, I don’t see them in rap videos, Audi isn’t the past or present brand of James Bond, and I don’t see many kids my age outside D.C. —even the obnoxiously rich ones— driving them.
